Quickies: Gmail’s jukebox
August 28th, 2006

I tend to email myself a lot of MP3s. Today, I did it for the first time using my Gmail account, and was pleasantly surprised to find an embedded play button directly in the mail item. Clicking on it brings up a Google Video style player that streams your MP3 from Gmail’s server.
I always love finding these small feature nuggets that Google embeds into its applications.

Gmail mp3 Player…

This feature, combined with Gmail Drive and Gmail Space extension for firefox and AllPeers extension for firefox could, indeed, be very, very handy.

So… lets just say for the sake of argument that I make 20 gmail accounts called MyMP3Music_1@gmail.com, MyMP3Music_2@gmail.com, MyMP3Music_3@gmail.com, etc.
And then I email myself gigabytes of MP3’s to these various accounts.
And then lets say, I give you all the passwords and tell you that you’re allowed to check my “mail”.

This would be perfect for something like Asterisk or Cisco’s Unified CallManager, where you can have your voicemail forwarded to your email. Just use your Gmail account and you can grab your voicemail from anywhere, search for voicemail from the second week in June, etc.
Awesome.

After thinking about it, I tried subscribing to podcasts with Google Reader and the embedded MP3 player shows up there as well. Very cool.

Jack Johnson — that is a brilliant idea! I’ll have to try it with our call management system at my workplace.

SWEET!!! I love google! Anyone ever use the AOL server (cerver, mm, etc) chat rooms? With most MP3’s being under 10 megs, this could be setup pretty damn sweet, I think that I will have to create a project for this in my programming class

[…] Horray! Today, my new Sony Ericsson K800i finally arrived. After the last time I tried to buy this phone on Ebay, the guy pulled out of the sale and Ebay by de-registering; I was a little miffed. But since this phone cost me £40 less than the last one, I am very happy now. Unfortunatly, it turned up in the post after I had already left for work, so I haven’t got to play with it yet I want to try it’s blogging tools out, hopfully they support XMLRPC so I can post directly to my site. Today, I also came across this post via Digg about the embedded media player in Gmail. Pretty nifty. I hope Google expand on this kind of work, this is the kind of stuff that Web 2.0 is made of - nice and simple ideas that work really well! Bookmark to: […]

I think what you actually stumbled upon is really meant to be voice mail (VOIP) capabilities that gmail will eventually incorporate into its technology.

But to know that I can also play me some MP3s is also nice to know!
